International Class at Aarhus College of Education

Curriculum

Vision:

The international dimension at Aarhus College of Education aims at establishing mutual understanding with foreign cultures, societies, values, and ways of professionalism in order that students and teachers may develop cultural competence, professionally as well as personally, qualifying them to communicate with different cultures, e.g. in the Danish Folkeskole.
Furthermore the international dimension aims at contributing to a dynamic professional development of theory and practice.

Values:

International dimensions in education are valuable:
  • because they entail inspiration and professional development, leading to improvement in various fields for students, teachers and subjects.
  • because contact to different cultures and outlooks on life is established, which in the daily professional practice may provide a basis for understanding and respecting diverse attitudes to the Danish folkeskole.
  • because they provide opportunities for achieving personal growth.
The goal of the international class at Aarhus College of Education is:
  • to develop international and intercultural aspects of the teacher training course
  • to develop an international study environment
  • to create a favourable setting for exchange students during their stay at Aarhus College of Education
Management and organisation of the international class:

The international class is placed in the third year of the teacher-training course as a self-contained unit made up by 15 local students and maximum 15 exchange students.
A reasonable proficiency in English and a high level of motivation to engage in the community of a new international class are prerequisites for the course.

Procedure for admission:

Exchange students:
Exchange students are admitted on a first come first served basis.

Danish students:
Students who take English as a subject the two first years can gain admission straightaway. All other Danish students will be given oral and written tests on their English skills.
If the number of Danish applicants exceeds 15, admission will be decided by drawing lots. A waiting list will be established.

All lessons will be conducted in English during the three months of the 5th term when the exchange student are studying at the college.

Danish students will attend exams according to the rules of the general curriculum, i.e. the contents of the subjects are in accordance with the syllabus for each subject. Appropriate topics will studied during the three months.

Exchange students are offered a practice period of three weeks.

Teachers' team

The teachers who teach the international class will form a team. This team will administer the course, e.g. develop and discuss different teaching and study forms as well as various ways of evaluation within each subject.
One teacher will be assigned the primary responsibility for the running of the international class.

Principles of the organization of the course

Subjects
The teachers of the subjects are responsible for the planning and running of the various lessons, offering different ways of teaching and studying.

Tuition
Each student will be allotted study guidance according to the directions in the general curriculum of the college.

Attendance
Guidelines for attendance are described in the general curriculum of the college.

The study plans comprise subject matters, organization of contents, outline of study forms, and descriptions of the scope of assignments included as an integral part of the course.

Teaching practice

Exchange students
The teaching practice will give the students an opportunity to gain knowledge of the Danish school system while offering a basis for forming individual attitudes and values as well as enabling the students to draw comparisons to other school systems.
The duration of the practice period is three weeks, usually weeks 43-45, with compulsory attendance.
In groups of two to four, exchange students will make lesson plans, observe and teach 14 lessons per week and have one hour's guidance each week.
