The Duration and Extent of Teacher Education

Teacher education is a four-year course

  •  During all four years of the education, there is teaching practice in the Danish comprehensiv
school. Attendance during teaching practice is mandatory.

  • Pedagogical studies are offered throughout the four-year education period.

  • All first year students study the following subjects: religious studies/philosophyand educational sociology (school and society).

  • All students must, at the beginning of the education period, choose to major in Danish or Mathematics. Students must also choose one other major subject among subjects offered. These two major subjects are completed after a two-year period.

  • Students must choose two new major subjects for the second two-year period of the education. These major subjects are completed at the end of the four-year teacher education period.

  • During the last semester, students must write a thesis based on one of their four major subject areas. This should be done in close cooperation with the pedagogical subjects and preferably also build on experiences from teaching practice.

Courses
The following courses, among others, are offered:

  • The practical/musical subjects

  • Teaching children during the first years of school

  • Teaching children with special needs

  • Writing and rhetoric

  • Chorus and band

  • Swimming

  • Drama

Teaching practice
Teaching practice begins already in the second week of the education. Teaching practice periods occur every year and comprise a total of 24 weeks of the four-year teacher education period. Teaching practice occurs in connection with all of a student's major subjects. Upon completion of every teaching practice period, an evaluation will take place that determines if the student is suited to teach children. After the final teaching practice period during the fourth year, the host school submits a final evaluation of the student. The evaluation results correspond to a pass/fail grade.

Teaching practise in Danish schools is normally always offered as part of a exchange study. It is organised as full time teaching practise for 2-3 weeks (2-3 hours teaching a day).
