A historical outline |
Aarhus College of Education came into existence in 1989 through a
fusion of two independent private colleges of education, Marselisborg and
Aarhus.
Thus Aarhus College of Education is a young college with a long
history.
One part of this history began in 1909 when an influential Danish church
organization decided to establish in Aarhus a College of Education for
Women. From 1923 also men could apply and over the following years the
college developed into a fully modern educational institution.
The other part of the history began in 1952 when as a result of a shortage
of teachers, Aarhus Evening College Of Education was founded. In the
subsequent years this college had a marked influence on educational
innovation in Denmark. It began taking in daytime students as well and
gradually the evening classes ceased to exist. In 1961 it was given the name
Marselisborg College of Education and it moved into its own new buildings.
In 1989 these two colleges of education were fused and today they are
located in the northern part of Aarhus close to the University of Aarhus and
other institutes of higher education.
