The education includes four major subjects. These four major subjects must include Danish and/or Mathematics, and must represent at least two of the following subject areas: humanities, natural sciences, and creative arts. Aarhus College of Education offers all major teacher education subjects.

Creative Arts

Teacher education is profession oriented. This means that the basis for studies in all major subjects must, when possible, be derived from the subject as it occurs in the Danish comprehensive school.

Pedagogical studies

The pedagogical subjects include the following: Educational theory (pedagogy), educational philosophy (general didactics), psychology and educational sociology (school and society). Teaching in all of the pedagogical subjects is organized according to a holistic principle. The qualifying function of the pedagogical subjects concerningstudents' future duties as teachers is emphasized.

Class teachers and teams

Every class has a corresponding class teacher during the first three years of the teacher education. The class teacher's task is, in correlation with the class and the associated spirit of community created herein, to help add a broader perspective as well as continuity to the education.

Every class also has a corresponding teacher team, which is comprised of the class teacher and two or three other teachers.

Experience exchange groups

From the beginning of the third year of the education, students participate in experience exchange groups. The goal of working in these groups is to support the student in developing him/herself as a student with the intention, among others, of creating a successful transition from being a student to being a teacher.
Every experience exchange group has a corresponding teacher.

Study log

The student is obliged to participate in the education. Every student at Aarhus College of Education must record his/her participation by writing a study log. The student can later use the study journal to manage and understand various aspects of his/her own education. It can also be a good tool for learning from past experiences.

Information technology

Aarhus College of Education gives high priority to the implementation of information technology. Extensive investments in computer technology and continuing education for the teaching staff and additional personnel have been made in recent years. The student will have the opportunity to work with databases, the Internet, Internet-based conferencing, e-mail, presentation programs, etc. in connection with studies within the individual subject areas of the education.

The international dimension

Students may incorporate the international dimension into the education, dependent on the opportunities available at the college, in one or more of the following ways:

  •  Exchange studies

  •  International teaching practice

  •  Cross-curricular projects

  •  As a perspective that is included in hypotheses and subject matter in all subject areas.
